The Sandy Spring Friends School project is multiple phased new construction including a new 22,000 square foot Athletic Center, a new 30,800 square foot Performing Arts Center, a new 25,000 square foot Middle School and the renovation of the Lower School and Dining Hall. The new Athletic Building includes a gymnasium, fitness center, trainer's room, offices and a multi-purpose room adjacent to the main lobby that can be used for special events. A second phase will include additional locker rooms and a swimming pool. The new Middle School includes general classrooms plus science, art, music and computer facilities. Classroom pods are organized by grade with connections to a central "Collection Room" used to gather all middle school students for short announcements and events. This building is designed with a living roof and other features to maximize natural ventilation and daylight and to reduce energy consumption. The new Performing Arts Building houses the school's departments of Music, Drama, and Dance as well as the main theater which features 383 seats, a proscenium stage and fly loft.
